In an isolated Orthodox convent in Romania, Alina has just been reunited with Voichita after spending several years in Germany. The two young women have supported and loved each other since meeting as children in an orphanage. Alina wants Voichita to leave and return with her to Germany, but Voichita has found refuge in faith and a family in the nuns and their priest, and refuses. Alina cannot understand her friend's choice. In her attempt to win back Voichita's affection, she challenges the priest. She is taken to hospital and the people of the monastery start to suspect that she is possessed. When the doctors send her back, Alina is included in the monastic routine in the hope that she will find peace. But her condition worsens and they finally have to tie her to a wooden plank to prevent her from hurting herself. After ruling out all other options, the priest and nuns decide to read her prayers to deliver those possessed by the Evil One. They perform an exorcism, but the result is not what they had hoped, and Voichita begins to doubt the religious choice she has made. She decides to free Alina - but her decision comes too late. Inspired by the non-fiction novels of Tatiana Niculescu Bran.

Review For Beyond The Hills

One of the year's most powerful films.
Andrew O'Hehir-Salon.com

The complexity of the film's moral world makes the movie far more than a simple anti-religious screed.
Dana Stevens-Slate

Beyond the Hills may be the best movie no one will want to see in 2013.
Mary F. Pols-TIME Magazine

The movie is a series of longueurs that don't add up to a grand design -- at 2-1/2 hours, it's unnecessarily repetitive -- but it has moments when the spiritual and the secular burst forth in stunning disarray.
Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor

At times the pace of "Beyond the Hills" is nerve-wrackingly slow. But Mungiu has his own way of creating suspense, and he has a gift for making a known outcome as shocking as a twist.
Farran Smith Nehme-New York Post

Mingiu used to be a journalist, and "Beyond the Hills" has the feel of real-life to it - no soaring soundtrack music, a cast full of everyday faces.
Stephen Whitty-Newark Star-Ledger

A bruising psychodrama from the Palme d'Or winner that taps into the dark heart of central European superstition.
David Parkinson-Empire Magazine

Deceivingly complex, with an emotional center that peels away like an onion the longer it unfolds, this is a powerful effort from Mungiu in which love and faith are both different kinds of poison.
Kevin Jagernauth-The Playlist

Mungiu's narrative is simple and slow, but necessarily so.
Annlee Ellingson-Paste Magazine

A powerful consideration of what are among man's basic needs and fears, 'Beyond the Hills' offers a subtle beauty that many viewers might not notice.
Donald J. Levit-ReelTalk Movie Reviews

Fraught with anxiety and callousness, Beyond the Hills can be hard to watch, although the severe sets, adumbral cinematography and wintry landscapes lend stark poetry to the proceedings.
Rex Roberts-Film Journal International

These people have no electricity - they have a RIGHT to be repetitive.
Jordan Hoffman-Badass Digest

Beyond The Hills has a rich understanding of the appeals and perils of religious values that provide structure and meaning to some while seeming cruel and irrational to outsiders.
Scott Tobias-AV Club
