Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You is a heart warming, funny and passionate portrait of a confused New York teenager, James Sveck, played by up-and-coming star Toby Regbo, and his loving, eccentric and dysfunctional family. James's staunch non-conformism leads him to teenage mistakes that are hard to undo. He refuses to go to college, after being accepted at Brown, and is interested in nothing - barring visits to his enigmatic, free-spirited grandmother Nanette, played by Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn, the only one who seems to understand just how lost a restless 17-year-old can feel while trying to find himself in a confusing world. -- (C) Official Site

Review For Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You

This cliche-ridden coming of age story is as painfully awkward as its troubled teen protagonist.
Frank Scheck-Hollywood Reporter

Several kinds of excruciating.
Neil Genzlinger-New York Times

His pain may be useful to James someday, but to viewers, it's annoying right here and now.
Joe Neumaier-New York Daily News

These 2-D characters might as well be wearing T-shirts that say things like "Predatory College Professor" and "Self-Obsessed Father" on them.
Chris Packham-Village Voice

The film is a pleasant watch, filled with nice little moments of comedy and tenderness, and optimistic about the fate of dreamers who happen to be a little slow out of the starting gate.
Rene Rodriguez-Miami Herald

Listless coming-of-age drama about teen's ho-hum "problems."
S. Jhoanna Robledo-Common Sense Media

The film takes itself too seriously while it tackles familiar territory.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

It's not exactly a trainwreck of a movie, but Someday This Pain is so void of depth and meaning, it often resembles a parody of the bruised teen subgenre.
Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com

The actors work overtime to make this would-be sensitive study of troubled youth work, but are undone by the windy triteness of the script.
David Noh-Film Journal International

It might actually make audiences understand the urge to bully.
Alison Willmore-AV Club

Roberto Faenza shoots his Manhattan-set action with a glossiness that's as bland as the soundtrack ballads.
Nick Schager-Slant Magazine
