When Akiko (Rin Takanashi), a lovely Tokyo student who moonlights as a call girl, is dispatched to a new client in the suburbs, she is surprised to find the shy and elderly Takashi (81-year-old stage actor Tadashi Okuno), a committed academic constantly distracted by work-related phone calls. The lonely widower seems far more interested in playing house than having sex, however, and the young woman soon falls asleep. The next day, when the two encounter Akiko's volatile boyfriend Noriaki (Ryo Kase), Takashi plays into Noriaki's assumption that he is actually Akiko's grandfather. As the three settle into their new roles, Takashi finds himself becoming the protector that Akiko so desperately needs. (c) Sundance Selects

Review For Like Someone in Love

Impeccably acted, infused with tremendous empathy for its three leads, and yet not without stretches of deliberate tedium...
William Goss-Film.com

There is love, the movie tells us, then there is love.
Joe Morgenstern-Wall Street Journal

Masterful filmmaking bridges a few gaps in the narrative.
John Anderson-Newsday

Like Someone in Love has rather simple, sentimental, melodramatic underpinnings, but the vantage changes everything. It opens up this world - and the next. It's an enthralling journey.
David Edelstein-Vulture

Like Someone in Love is a movie that never quite lets you through to the other side of the glass, but it's dazzling to watch whatever drifts by on the surface.
Dana Stevens-Slate

Despite its visual felicities, Like Someone in Love is so free-floating that it floats away.
Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor

Minor Abbas Kiarostami is still a reason for celebration.
Brian Tallerico-HollywoodChicago.com

If there is a visual equivalent to that title song - the Billie Holiday version is favored here - Kiarostami seems to have found it.
Josh Larsen-LarsenOnFilm

No filmmaker is above making errors of judgment. Kiarostami makes a big one.
Cole Smithey-ColeSmithey.com

A meticulously constructed depiction of modern alienation, from the great Abbas Kiarostami.
Robert Levin-amNewYork

A companion piece to Certified Copy but reminiscent of Taste of Cherry, it falls somewhere between those celebrated Kiarostami signature pieces, yet his new film has a sense and style of its own.
Rex Roberts-Film Journal International

Masterfully beguiling, Like Someone in Love is a little gem of a film that explores how relationships and roles change depending on the needs, circumstances and desires of the people involved.
Will McCord-Paste Magazine

Is this the stuff of gripping drama? Not at all. But like nearly all of Kiarostami's films, it's the stuff of good conversation.

The 3D animated family comedy catapults moviegoers to planet Baab where admired astronaut Scorch Supernova (Brendan Fraser) is a national hero to the blue alien population. A master of daring rescues, Scorch pulls off astonishing feats with the quiet aid of his nerdy, by-the-rules brother, Gary (Rob Corddry), head of mission control at BASA. When BASA's no-nonsense chief Lena (Jessica Alba) informs the brothers of an SOS from a notoriously dangerous planet, Scorch rejects Gary's warnings and bounds off for yet another exciting mission. But when Scorch finds himself caught in a fiendish trap set by the evil Shanker (William Shatner) it's up to scrawny, risk-adverse Gary to do the real rescuing. As the interplanetary stakes rise to new heights, Gary is left to save his brother, his planet, his beloved wife Kira (Sarah Jessica Parker) and their adventure hungry son Kip. (c) Weinstein

Review For Escape From Planet Earth 3D

Just like its hero and his grounded starship, Escape From Planet Earth is, for much of the film, a decidedly earthbound adventure.
Michael O'Sullivan-Washington Post

Colorful as the 3-D aliens-among-us comedy is to look at, though, Corddry is handed a role that's beige as can be, and so are his castmates.
Tom Russo-Boston Globe

A lightweight, warp-speed, brightly colored trifle that should delight small children and sporadically amuse their parents.
Joe Leydon-Variety

It never discovers new worlds, but "Escape From Planet Earth" is, in its genial way, escape enough.
Sheri Linden-Los Angeles Times

A children's movie about space-traveling blue beings that has lots of high-flying escapades but fairly low aspirations.
Neil Genzlinger-New York Times

Has it all for people looking for nothing.
Laremy Legel-Film.com

The best thing I can say about Escape From Planet Earth is that I didn't end up hating it as much as I thought I was going to during the first half.
Louis Black-Austin Chronicle

An amiable animated feature that should entertain the younger kids.
Jackie K. Cooper-jackiekcooper.com

Serviceable sci-fi - stopping momentarily at local theaters en route to its destiny on DVD as generic, escapist diversion for youngsters, teaching teamwork and preaching family loyalty and love.
Susan Granger-SSG Syndicate

An energetic but thoroughly watered-down kiddie flick.
Rob Humanick-Slant Magazine

A surprisingly well-produced effort that fills the recent vacuum of family films without totally sucking.
Erick Weber-NECN

The colorful animation can't compensate for a mediocre script that generally lacks depth, excitement and consistent laughs.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

And just to make sure the feature radiates complete nonsense, every time a character falls in Escape from Planet Earth, there's a fart sound effect piped in. Surely your children would rather watch Argo instead, right?
Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com

Predictable alien adventure is violent and forgettable.
Sandie Angulo Chen-Common Sense Media

It almost works as an amiable, if derivative, time-waster for kids with a few jokes for the grown-ups, but too much is unsettlingly off-base.
Nell Minow-Beliefnet

Escape from Planet Earth's flaws would be more forgivable if the film offered better fun for younger viewers.
Sandy Schaefer-ScreenRant

The late Douglas Adams summed up Earth as "mostly harmless," a description that also applies to this eminently tolerable animated time-filler.
Vadim Rizov-Time Out New York

It's a bowl of warm water into which no one has bothered to place a bouillon cube. The kids in the theater with me never mustered a single laugh or gasp of excitement. It's plenty o' nuttin'.
Alonso Duralde-The Wrap

It's unchallenging fun for a younger crowd, but adults might feel like they're staring down a colorful 24-piece board puzzle, trying to figure out how such a simple activity could be drawn out over 90 minutes.

Review For Safe Haven

Plods along with dialogue just above the level of crayon scribblings, and the direction by the usually reliable Lasse Hallström is dismayingly sluggish.
Rex Reed-New York Observer

It's as though the filmmakers lacked the confidence to stick with the basic story, which served every element needed in a Sparks-infused guilty pleasure.
Michael Granberry-Dallas Morning News

On its own merits, Safe Haven is about as satisfying and filling as a Valentine's Day conversation heart, with far less to say.
Kate Erbland-MSN Movies

The latest Nicholas Sparks-derived weepfest, Safe Haven, is being marketed as a Valentine's Day special, but the plot line is closer to a stalker thriller. It's sudsy-scary. It's also not very good.
Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor

Hough doesn't stand a chance against shoddy pacing, horrific editing, and plot direction disastrous enough to make your toes curl.
Laremy Legel-Film.com

Hough emits all the charisma of a personal assistant ...
Melissa Anderson-Village Voice

The initial air of mystery dissipates like a fart in a lift that everyone should be too embarrassed to acknowledge.
Stella Papamichael-Digital Spy

It's compelling stuff, for all the wrong reasons. and reaches a barking apex of doolally tapness when one of the minor characters reveals herself to be a charitable ghost.
Tim Evans-Sky Movies

The plot holes are so big that you can drive a bus through them and you'll come out of the cinema asking 'But why didn't...?' about many things.
Roz Laws-Birmingham Post

[The] final reel ... descends into the Vortex of Bonkers, delivering fits of unexpected laughter.
Trevor Johnston-Time Out

Sudsily romantic, sometimes unintentionally hilarious, and bound to be a hit.
Siobhan Synnot-Scotsman

Hallström is an old pro at navigating this kind of undemandingly dramatic yarn and does a pretty fine job with Sparks' story.
Anna Smith-Empire Magazine

The whole film is mild until the end. You won't believe it, but it's also not worth believing.
Jeff Bayer-The Scorecard Review

This one is pure Nicolas Sparks and for his millions of fans that is more than enough.
Jackie K. Cooper-jackiekcooper.com

Lasse Hallstrom directed. I can only hope he did it for the money.
Craig Seligman-Bloomberg News

Moves along at the pace of a leisurely paddled canoe, until the big, explosive, action-y roll-call finale of everything and everyone, in one place, at one time, plus fireworks.
Neil Pond-American Profile

Safe Haven is a blandly 'vanilla' film; attractively shot in picturesque locations, peppered with recognizable if unexciting faces, and delivering a simplistic homily about love conquering all that only a teenage girl could love.
Eddie Harrison-The List

It's hard to imagine a blander duo than Hough and Josh Duhamel as they knock awkwardly against one another in their painfully telegraphed love scenes, and a third-act twist is unintentionally hilarious.
Emma Dibdin-Total Film

The real problem though... is the ending. The laughs during the preview screening and the post-film discussions with friends in foyer confirmed I was not alone with my thinking.
Matthew Toomey-ABC Radio Brisbane

... another slick and calculated beachfront love story that should please Sparks' legions of indiscriminate fans while making even casual cynics cringe.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

See it if you love this kind of paint-by-numbers Hallmark romance that ranges from the dull to the ridiculous. But please, don't drag your significant other with you to it.
Kevin Carr-7M Pictures

From author/producer Nicholas Sparks, the cornball master who gave this generation its Love Story with The Notebook, comes another full-bodied, four-course serving of perfectly prepared romantic mush.
Jim Schembri-3AW

Audiences will leave with tears in their eyes, believing in the power of true love. Or, in the alternative, trying not to slip on the schmaltz left as residue from the movie.
Daniel M. Kimmel-Sci-Fi Movie Page

Their love story has a mellow ease -- as neither of them has much of a personality, we're just watching two swell people decide to bone
Amy Nicholson-Badass Digest

The Nicholas Sparks novel inspired movie is neither inspired nor novel. For those who love this stuff, your sugary treat awaits.

In this definitive documentary, director Christopher Felver crafts an incisive, sharply wrought portrait that reveals Ferlinghetti's true role as catalyst for numerous literary careers and for the Beat movement itself. One-on-one interviews with Ferlinghetti, made over the course of a decade, touch upon a rich mélange of characters and events that began to unfold in postwar America. These events include the publication of Allen Ginsberg's Howl, William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch, and Jack Kerouac's On the Road, as well as the divisive events of the Vietnam war, the sexual revolution, and this country's perilous march towards intellectual and political bankruptcy. Review For Ferlinghetti A Rebirth of Wonder

His contribution to the culture of American letters is undeniable, and City Lights -- the store and the imprint -- could well be the closest thing to a literary shrine that we possess.
Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor

With Americans' civil liberties under constant threat, it's comforting to know that Ferlinghetti is still with us.
V.A. Musetto-New York Post

This biography is often effusive in its praise, but some lives and legacies were meant for a tribute.
Daniel M. Gold-New York Times

Sadly, the film gets mired in traditionalism, something the man himself always railed against.
Joe Neumaier-New York Daily News

This affectionate documentary doesn't do full justice to its important subject.
Frank Scheck-Hollywood Reporter

A loving tribute to a man who taught my generation to worship art rather than mammon.
Louis Proyect-rec.arts.movies.reviews

Christopher Felver is too reverent to properly convey the invigoratingly profane, angry messiness of the sense of community that Lawrence Ferlinghetti and his peers too briefly brought to life.
Chuck Bowen-Slant Magazine

Loving documentary about one of the greatest, and still wonderfully extant, poetic and political forces of our time.
David Noh-Film Journal International

A tribute to poet and publisher Lawrence Ferlinghetti as a creator and nurturer of wonder.
Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat-Spirituality and Practice

Explores what exactly people have been hungry for that the poet has touched in them for over half a century, and fed their souls. And whether or not this filmmaker's quest has perhaps unleashed his inner stalker. At least according to Ferlinghetti.

Review For The Playroom

Modest in scale, it's the kind of American independent film that brings some honor to that shopworn descriptor.
Chris Vognar-Dallas Morning News

The film uses the upper-middle-class setting effectively, even as it resorts to heavy-handed symbolism and melodrama in its dour, mostly unforgiving portrait of parental dysfunction.
Sheri Linden-Los Angeles Times

A detailed, and depressing portrait of grim, forced independence. Lightened only by the sense that if these kids are learning anything, it is how to survive.
Stephen Whitty-Newark Star-Ledger

This imitation "Ice Storm" is as refreshing as a step into a puddle of slush.
Kyle Smith-New York Post

Between the loaded conversations and metaphors, and the phony overlay of a children's fairy tale, The Playroom can't stop telegraphing themes and interpreting itself. There's nothing left for the audience to do.
Scott Tobias-NPR

"The Playroom" captures the malaise of mid-'70s suburbia with a merciless accuracy not seen since Ang Lee's 1997 film, "The Ice Storm."
Stephen Holden-New York Times

It's a misfire from screenwriter Gretchen Dyer and director Julia Dyer, who can't connect the puzzle pieces, resulting in a movie of attentive performances working through ill-defined storytelling.
Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com

If The Ice Storm was a band, think of this as the minor-chord, label-unsigned, opening act for its opening act. Lovingly captured but dramatically inert.
Brent Simon-Shockya.com

A reliance on melodrama prevents a deeper and more insightful glimpse into the characters and subject matter.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

Parents seek joy, ignore kids in difficult, powerful drama.
S. Jhoanna Robledo-Common Sense Media

A chamber piece cousin to The Ice Storm, The Playroom hones in on the mentality of so many irresponsible '70s era parents whose children grew up to be much better people than their parents.
Cole Smithey-ColeSmithey.com

What little story there is has no sense of real life, no matter much the film pretends to be about children learning hard truths.

Review For The Sorcerer and the White Snake

These showdowns feature spectacular, Lord of the Rings-style CGI settings, but not much in the way of thrills or terror.
Mark Jenkins-NPR

The clunky action mostly revolves around uninspired wire-fu choreography: Monks fly around while flailing their arms as hordes of CGI creatures gather around and then do nothing.
Simon Abrams-Village Voice

A silly, derivative supernatural-action extravaganza that would have been better at a fraction of its f/x budget.
Justin Chang-Variety

Fantastic visuals and non-stop action make for a spectacular, romantic Chinese CGI feast.
Deborah Young-Hollywood Reporter

A masterpiece of imagination. Offers wall-to-wall goofy fun for fans of martial arts flicks, fantasies, or just good old-fashioned cinematic nuttiness.
Mike McGranaghan-Aisle Seat

This hyperactive assault on the senses from Hong Kong is noteworthy only for its dazzling array of computer-generated special effects.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

We've seen this movie before, in better clothes and with a much higher IQ.
Rob Vaux-Mania.com

The film looks so glossy, plasticized, and unreal that all you end up thinking about is special effects.
Kenji Fujishima-Slant Magazine

An amusing Chinese martial arts reminder that not all cheese comes from Switzerland, or Wisconsin.
Roger Moore-Movie Nation

It's a sometimes charming film from the veteran action filmmaker, but remains a curiosity, lacking comic sharpness and romantic intensity.
Jason Di Rosso-MovieTime, ABC Radio National

There's hardly any love affair left really because the CGI has taken over with a vengeance. I got a bit bored by this, because it's just special effects, just CGI all the way through and the story is just shunted aside.
David Stratton-At the Movies (Australia)

The director has pulled out all stops to impress, perhaps a bit too excessively, so that the fragile emotions of this love affair are undermined.
Margaret Pomeranz-At the Movies (Australia)

Though The Sorcerer and the White Snake is excessive and at times jumbled, younger viewers will surely respond to the colourful characters and settings, and the bold vision on display is charming... for the most part.
Michael Simms-FILMINK (Australia)

With the mushometer maxed out, and a score that starts on overdrive and heads for overbearing, this ridiculously melodramatic tale of forbidden love tries to bury its narrative flaws with a colourful coating of CGI - but ends up a shiny glutinous mess.

Review For A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III

This giant turkey was produced, written, and directed by Roman Coppola, who must have thought the dumb fantasy sequences, steeped in movieland imagery, would remind people of 8-1/2 (or, at the very least, Head).
J. R. Jones-Chicago Reader

The audience finds out just how long 84 minutes can be. The answer: really long.
Mick LaSalle-San Francisco Chronicle

Perhaps the best thing that can be said about the film is that it adequately depicts the narcissism of its star ...
Peter Howell-Toronto Star

A film is a terrible thing to waste.
Roger Ebert-Chicago Sun-Times

The execution ... is perilously self-absorbed ...
Lisa Schwarzbaum-Entertainment Weekly

A movie that doesn't really seem to have any reason to exist, other than maybe to give writer and director Roman Coppola and star Charlie Sheen something to do for a few weeks.
Bill Goodykoontz-Arizona Republic

At once feeds into and deconstructs the Sheen persona; it also serves as a welcome reminder that, when he's not busy "winning" or having a public meltdown, the man is a charismatic onscreen presence.
Michael Nordine-Willamette Week

An artist-playboy stalking an ex-girlfriend sounds tailor-made for Charlie Sheen, but he and his comedy are rather bland. A not quite fully formed film from Roman Coppola.
Clint O'Connor-Cleveland Plain Dealer

It allows moviegoers the dubious pleasure of experiencing what a film by the late Bob Fosse might have been like if only Fosse had been a moron.
Peter Sobczynski-eFilmCritic.com

Charles Swan III just needs to grow up. And unpleasant as it may be, we deserve more than a glimpse into his mind.
Marc Mohan-Oregonian

There isn't much interesting about delving into the psyche of a broad, meaningless caricature. Ooh, tell us about your rich internal life, Joe Camel!
Vincent Mancini-FilmDrunk

Do we sympathize with Swann? Not remotely. Do we find his friends interesting? Not at all.
Bill Brownstein-Montreal Gazette

The guys play victims and lament the poor condition of being horny guys whose significant others won't just be happy with men who make no effort at all.
Matt Pais-RedEye

Proves two things - that Charlie Sheen is a better actor than his public persona and stint on Two and a Half Men may have led you to believe and that he needs to find a character to prove that instead of this riff on his real-life drama.
Brian Tallerico-HollywoodChicago.com

Breezily charming film is more heart-on-the-sleeve warm and visually generous.
David Noh-Film Journal International

As Charles Swan seems to become more aware of his loneliness, Charlie Sheen seems to become more protective of his Charlie Sheen-ness.

Winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlinale, Paolo and Vittorio Taviani's Caesar Must Die deftly melds narrative and documentary in a transcendently powerful drama-within-a-drama. The film was made in Rome's Rebibbia Prison, where the inmates are preparing to stage Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. After a competitive casting process, the roles are eventually allocated, and the prisoners begin exploring the text, finding in its tale of fraternity, power and betrayal parallels to their own lives and stories. Hardened criminals, many with links to organised crime, these actors find great motivation in performing the play. As we witness the rehearsals, beautifully photographed in various nooks and crannies within the prison, we see the inmates also work through their own conflicts, both internal and between each other. -- (C) Adopt

Review For Caesar Must Die

Prison theatricals are nothing new in the movies, but Caesar Must Die, a quasi-documentary featuring hardened convicts acting out Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, is in a class by itself.
Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor

Ranks among the most involving adaptations of Shakespeare ever put on screen ...
Kenneth Turan-Los Angeles Times

What works best is what's readily accessible, the startling power of performers who understand the drama all too well.
Joe Morgenstern-Wall Street Journal

The film gets on screen not only the play's bloody, double-dealing, hungry essence, but the redemptive potential of art.
Farran Smith Nehme-New York Post

The Tavianis blur the boundaries between fact and fiction, but they couldn't do it without the full complicity of their actors, or the audience.
Elizabeth Weitzman-New York Daily News

You can only guess what the lines mean to the inmates, who register as atmospheric blanks at best and brutal exotics at worst, even if the tale that they enact with such earnest vigor works because the original tragedy does.
Manohla Dargis-New York Times

It's an arresting, playful and moving film ...
Dave Calhoun-Time Out

[It] has plenty of wit and punch, although compared to the best of the medium - Man On Wire, for instance - it sometimes comes off as guileless and clunky.

Paolo and Vittorio Taviani brilliantly merge documentary and fiction in this film about a prison production of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar.
Maria Garcia-Film Journal International

For a movie with such a brisk pace -- it clocks in at just 76 minutes -- "Caesar Must Die" has surprising depth ...

In Caesar Must Die, the characters are both actor and audience, looking at themselves through the lens of a centuries-old fictionalization of history.

Review For Mumia: Long Distance Revolutionary

"Mumia" gradually becomes a persuasive attempt to celebrate the content of his character, not the violence that apparently led to his imprisonment.
John Hartl-Seattle Times

Vittoria avoids discussing the crime for which Abu-Jamal spent 29 years in solitary confinement on death row, instead tracing the path of a brilliant journalist whose message cannot be silenced.
Ronnie Scheib-Variety

The doc is unapologetically one-sided, and spends more time canonizing Abu-Jamal than exploring the murder and trial themselves.
V.A. Musetto-New York Post

This film is certainly a bracing change from the usual back-and-forth of the evening news.
Neil Genzlinger-New York Times

The case of Mumia Abu-Jamal, the African-American journalist sentenced to die for a 1981 Philadelphia murder charge, gets a juicy, visual but inescapably tilted treatment here.

Review For The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia

The rotting corpses, projectile insect vomit, and creepy geezers in black arrive pretty much on cue, as does the great Cicely Tyson as the obligatory old blind woman who "sees" more than most people with two good eyes.

Some decent scares are provided in this refreshingly low-key ghost story.
Frank Scheck-Hollywood Reporter

This sequel in name only is a superior pic in almost every possible way, and deserves better than the half-hearted dump -- limited theatrical exposure day-and-date with VOD release -- it's been given by Lionsgate.
Joe Leydon-Variety

Well-worn hokum.
William Goss-Film.com

The filmmakers trot out slavery as a general sins-of-the-past signifier and then have no idea what to really do with such a painful real-world issue.
Mark Olsen-Los Angeles Times

The Haunting In Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia is just as tired a haunting film as its predecessor, failing to signify itself as a uniquely entertaining horror experience.
Matt Donato-We Got This Covered

Ultimately nothing more than a decrepit vehicle for the moldiest of scary-movie clichés: screechy specters, inane character behavior and jump scares that a toddler could anticipate minutes ahead of time.

Review For Bullet to the Head

Hill's eye for back alley scuzz is as strong as ever, but the story, adapted from a French graphic novel by Alexis Nolent, is so die-cut it gives neither him nor Stallone anything to work with.
J. R. Jones-Chicago Reader

On its own degenerate terms, the movie works.
David Edelstein-Vulture

It's a series of fight scenes that build to a climax that is surprisingly unsatisfying in the way it ultimately plays out.
James Berardinelli-ReelViews

Sylvester Stallone shoots people in the face. That's it for subtext in this formula action swill. Why do I sound like I should expect more. Because the credits list the director as Walter Hill.
Peter Travers-Rolling Stone

Bullet to the Head doesn't try to adapt its star to 2013. It just pretends that we're still living in 1986. And for 91 minutes, it just about works.
Chris Nashawaty-Entertainment Weekly

The Geritol action genre lumbers on in the lackluster "Bullet to the Head," starring Sylvester Stallone, or at least a beef jerky replica.
Colin Covert-Minneapolis Star Tribune

If you've longed for a lower class of drug peddling than Breaking Bad's crystal-meth scam or for a more volatile kingpin than Breaking Bad's Heisenberg, then writer-director Michaël R Roskam's debut film is for you.
Tara Brady-Irish Times

Look, Stallone has a perky daughter. Will she end up tied to a chair in a disused refinery (or something)? You know it.
Donald Clarke-Irish Times

... a star vehicle for Stallone first and foremost, giving him a potentially intriguing antihero character surrounded by a story that shoots blanks.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

Stallone still mumbles the lines, but his timing is pretty good and the jokes are well done. Violent as the film is, the special effects and stunts are impressive, especially the ax fight at the end.
Tony Medley-Tolucan Times

An okay action movie but sadly Stallone has entered into the "who cares" category.
Jackie K. Cooper-jackiekcooper.com

Stallone and Hill make the often-corny dialogue sound not only plausible but weirdly logical.
Kelly Vance-East Bay Express

With a cracked-asphalt voice, a shaved-wildebeest hide, the veined musculature of Swamp Thing and the apparent flexibility of a tree trunk, the aging Sylvester Stallone remains a commanding, amusing and somewhat awe-inspiring screen presence.
John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)

Thanks to Hill's directorial brio and some hot-wired one liners, Stallone can still put bad folks out of their misery real fast.
Graham Young-Birmingham Mail

This is a very violent police action film, and that is all you can expect from it.
Robert Roten-Laramie Movie Scope

Not a classic action film, but it's a decent genre entry and the fight scenes are worth the price of admission.

Lori Hoffman-Atlantic City Weekly

The filmmakers must see this as idea laundering - if a movie comes from a French graphic novel inspired by American movies, then it's not really stolen moronic movie junk. It's French!
Kirk Honeycutt-honeycuttshollywood.com

It's not a terrible movie, merely a mediocre one.
Chris Knight-National Post

Don't bother with plot coherence or plausibility - if you're going to a Stallone film for logic, then you're in the wrong theater.
Monica Castillo-Boston Phoenix

More curdled nostalgia than cinematic excitement.
Frank Swietek-One Guy's Opinion

This is hard-R action done old-school style. If that's your game, then gather up and throw in.
Jason Buchanan-TV Guide's Movie Guide

Sylvester Stallone plays to his base in a gratifying return to the action genre
Daniel Eagan-Film Journal International

[D]amn near the most unwatchable piece of junk I've seen that hasn't gone straight to DVD or late-night cable. It's barely even a movie, in fact -- it's more like a meatbrawl...
MaryAnn Johanson-Flick Filosopher

Jason Mamoa also impressed me as the villain; all his sins for "Conan the Barbarian" are forgiven and hopefully the climactic axe fight will prove to Stallone that we have a new Expendable cast member the next time around.
Kristian Harloff-Schmoes Know

The fights are worth the price of admission (come on people, there's an axe fight!), but as a movie "Bullet to the Head" can't get up there with Sly's other recent endeavors.

This spare, haunting, deceptively slight film - marking the feature debut of French filmmaker Valerie Massadian - zeroes in on the behavior and existential state of its 4-year-old protagonist. Growing up in rural France, Nana lives in a seemingly idyllic environment, but Massadian increasingly complicates our notion of the child's innocence. Opening with a matter-of-fact depiction of the butchering of a pig (Nana lives on her grandfather's pig farm), the film gradually tightens its focus to convey the child's perspective as she entertains herself in solitude. The subtlety and ingenuity with which Massadian reveals aspects of Nana's environment through the details of her playing is astounding, and only gradually do we come to realize the full, disturbing extent of her situation. Founded on the remarkable rapport between filmmaker and infant actress - "There's not one word, one gesture - nothing - that I imposed on her. We played", Massadian told Interview Magazine - NANA is a delicate, unsettling, and uniquely affecting film. (c) Anthology

Review For Nana

Driven by a combination of narrative economy and emotional expansiveness, Valérie Massadian's "Nana" is as difficult to pin down as the inner life of the tiny human at its center.
Jeannette Catsoulis-New York Times

A fiction film that documents the unpredictable, unscripted actions of its pint-size lead, Nana offers new ways of thinking about childhood, or, at the very least, about children in movies.
Melissa Anderson-Village Voice

It's a quiet and often lovely film, scored only with sounds of the forest (which we see, as Nana does, as a magical place) and the wind, letting a child make her own story.
Moira MacDonald-Seattle Times

Tedious and slightly sickening, Valérie Massadian's debut feature focuses on a child but is hardly a children's movie.
Eric Monder-Film Journal International

Its meta-cinematic "think piece"-ness is redeemed by the slinky symmetries drawn between Massadian's own auteur-ship and the protagonist's narrative role.

Following the death of Jagger, Dr. Yossi Hoffman (Ohad Knoller, Yossi and Jagger, Munich) has become a valued and dedicated workaholic cardiologist who lives a solitary existence as a closeted gay man in Tel Aviv. His world is shaken when a middle-aged woman from his past (Orly Silbersatz, Broken Wings) walks into his examination room. Their brief and distressing reunion along with troubles at work, spur Yossi to take an overdue vacation. On a road trip to Eilat, a chance encounter with a group of young Israeli IDF officers, among them Tom (rising star Oz Zehavi, Southland) a handsome and openly gay man, allows Yossi to move on from his grief and begin to live again. One of Israel's most noted directors and best chroniclers of gay life, Eytan Fox was born in New York and moved to Israel at an early age. He graduated from Tel Aviv University's School of Film and Television. His previous film, the Berlin International Film Festival and LA Outfest Award Winner The Bubble, follows three roommates in Tel Aviv, a political activist and two gay men, one of whom (played by YOSSI's Ohad Kneller) falls in love with a Palestinian. Mr. Fox's Walk on Water starred YOSSI's Lior Ashkenazi as a Mossad officer under cover confronting the Nazi past of an upper class young German man. (c) Strand

Review For Yossi

The film's pacing sputters as Fox drags Yossi through dreary scenes of self-denying repression.
Colin Covert-Minneapolis Star Tribune

"Yossi" offers genuine pleasures (even some of Fox's trademark musical numbers).
David Lewis-San Francisco Chronicle

It's a slight but uplifting charmer that serves as a feel-good bookend to the sadder first film.
Rene Rodriguez-Miami Herald

Predictable if measured uplift aside, Fox keeps "Yossi" effortlessly affecting, graced with deadpan humor and a knowingness about lonely lives.
Robert Abele-Los Angeles Times

Beneath its economical story line, "Yossi" is also about leaving the past behind in a larger, national, more metaphysical fashion, too.
John Anderson-Newsday

The film keeps its focus small, but the trouble is, the characters' emotions stay that way, too.
Farran Smith Nehme-New York Post

...[Knoller's] portrayal of a person locked in his own grief is both realistic and sympathetic, and Fox brings events to a conclusion that is more than worth the wait.
Sarah Boslaugh-PopMatters

The several allusions to Thomas Mann's forbidden-love novel "Death in Venice" are apt, but "Yossi" is also a standalone film and an extraordinary sequel.
Joe Williams-St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Hovers somewhere between a realistic take on love and the vision of romance sold by drugstore novels.
Chris Hewitt (St. Paul)-St. Paul Pioneer Press

Directed by Eytan Fox, the gifted helmer of the international hit Walk on Water, 'Yossi,' a work of special depth, is yet another of his incisive character studies of a man who doesn't quite fit in until he finally does.
Brandon Judell-CultureCatch

A dramatically challenging sequel, given warmly effective heart and soul by lead actor Ohad Knoller.
David Noh-Film Journal International

Eytan Fox and screenwriter Itay Segal have made this a truly universal story about a man who finds the courage to pursue the possibility of love again after heartbreak and loss.
Mark Deming-TV Guide's Movie Guide

The film's central romance veers into the realm of wish-fulfillment, but it's still drawn with tenderness and sensitivity ...
Nathan Rabin-AV Club

The film is at its finest as a catalogue of Yossi's unspoken ache, less so when it begins to flirt with the clichés of the love story.
Diego Costa-Slant Magazine

Fox's melancholy follow-up to his festival-feted breakthrough easily stands on its own, tracing Yossi's gradual emerging from his mostly self-created shell.

[It] eventually finds its own rhythm and meaningful chaos.
Tom Keogh-Seattle Times

Mick LaSalle-San Francisco Chronicle

Salvador Dali meets George Romero. Say hello.
Steven Rea-Philadelphia Inquirer

"John Dies at the End" dies closer to the beginning, before writer-director Don Coscarelli's adaptation of the book of the same name has reached minute 20.
Michael Phillips-Chicago Tribune

What Coscarelli's achieved doesn't feel like an adaptation. It feels more like he seems he skimmed the source material, burned it, and then assembled a vague recollection on film after three days of untold indulgences.
Charlie Schmidlin-Chicago Sun-Times

"John Dies at the End" thinks it's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" for dudes. But in its randomness, its vulgarity and its level of humor, it's more like the collected writings on the walls of a roadside men's room.
Kyle Smith-New York Post

John Dies at the End is really freaking weird. It's along the lines of Quentin Dupieux's Rubber, but really pushes the boundaries of absurdity. Just remember that you don't choose the soy sauce. The soy sauce chooses you.
Chris Sawin-Examiner.com

A confusing plot to begin with, the adaptation of the novel is a certified mess, attempting to provide blow-by-blow illustrations of scenes from the source book, and lifting most of the narration and dialogue verbatim.
Leah Churner-Austin Chronicle

Coscarelli's visual imagination is still capable of making you sit up and take notice
James Verniere-Boston Herald

...a hilarious and occasionally icky story that should hit the sweet spot for people who like twisted movies and are fed up with the Hollywood assembly line.

John Dies at the End should carry a drug label warning: caution consumption of this film may induce hallucinations, impair your ability to see the world as you once did, and cause outbursts of uncontrollable laughter.
Beth Accomando-KPBS.org

Not your typical psycho-action-comedy-horror hybrid. A fun idea that starts out great, but then . . .
Clint O'Connor-Cleveland Plain Dealer

Sort of like if Franz Kafka drank a bunch of absinthe and then wrote an homage to Sam Raimi, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and Donnie Darko. And that's a good thing

As with most fantasy films, the story is secondary to inventive images and speculative ideas. And more than most, this one adheres to its own logic in ways that are continually entertaining.
Joe Williams-St. Louis Post-Dispatch

A midnight movie that makes you wish you went to bed early ... falls into the no-man's-land of movies you may need to be high to enjoy, but can barely follow when sober.

Baye Laye is the captain of a fishing pirogue. Like many of his Senegalese compatriots, he sometimes dreams of new horizons, where he can earn a better living for his family. When he is offered to lead one of the many pirogues that head towards Europe via the Canary Island, he reluctantly accepts the job, knowing full-well the dangers that lie ahead. Leading a group of 30 men who don't all speak the same language, some of whom have never seen the sea, Baye Laye will confront many perils in order to reach the distant coasts of Europe. Review For The Pirogue

It's as sadly repetitive a story for Europe as it is for the US: would-be immigrants risking all for a better opportunity elsewhere.
Farran Smith Nehme-New York Post

Every moment feels human and true, from the naive optimism of the trip's sendoff to its unsparingly realistic conclusion, which trades reckless hope for quiet honor.
Elizabeth Weitzman-New York Daily News

Given the film's neo-neorealist imperative, the real achievement here is affecting detail within an observational approach.
Andrew Schenker-Village Voice

[It] touches, subtly, on issues of faith, feminism and a faltering world economy.
Stephen Whitty-Newark Star-Ledger

A remarkably cleareyed, quietly ambitious film ...
A.O. Scott-New York Times

What distinguishes it is not the depiction of danger and loss at sea, but a deep understanding of West African culture. Unlike such glib Hollywood issue pictures as Blood Diamond, The Pirogue is rich with authentic details.
Mark Jenkins-NPR

Director Moussa Touré's allegorical underpinning transforms this rather predictable plot, ripped from familiar headlines around the world, into a decidedly Senegalese story.
Maria Garcia-Film Journal International

A key to the realism is tribal and linguistic diversity so often ignored in films about Africans. . memorably captures the staggering determination it takes to go to Europe.
Nora Lee Mandel-Film-Forward.com

There's enough filmmaking talent evident throughout that you wish the journey were more satisfying overall.
Keith Uhlich-Time Out New York

Moussa Touré's worldview, like Ousmane Sembene's, is characterized by the feeling that, at the end of the day, some degree of loss or defeat is inevitable.
Calum Marsh-Slant Magazine

Politically powerful neorealist treatment on Senegalese "boat people" done with a poet's touch.
Louis Proyect-rec.arts.movies.reviews

A compelling cross of Life of Pi and Lifeboat, a seafaring tale of survival sans the Bengal tiger and Tallulah Bankhead.

And suddenly the question on everyone's mind: Is Aaron really the man he appears to be? Or is it true that "Nobody really knows anybody, least of all themselves?" Review For Brief Reunion

A movie like this should be a tightening noose as your anxiety for the main character keeps rising. Aaron is charmless, self-absorbed and perception-free.
Farran Smith Nehme-New York Post

Efficiently told and features solid performances, but without the juicy character detail, vise-grip suspense or black comic intensity of its memorable forerunners, it unwinds as a boilerplate genre item.
Sheri Linden-Los Angeles Times

The juicy dramatic possibilities of buried secrets and lies and cybertrickery are left unexplored. The movie's shade of noir is a dull gray.
Stephen Holden-New York Times

The film's failure to raise the temperature gradually leaves viewers less involved than we should be.
John DeFore-Hollywood Reporter

[A] well-acted but rather slack drama ...
Ernest Hardy-Village Voice

Review For Here and There

Award-winning examination of migrant labor would have worked better as a documentary.
Neil Young-Hollywood Reporter

If the intent was to keep the characters here just as anonymous as most migrant workers are to prosperous people in the United States, it succeeds: Pedro and his family remain mere sketches.
Neil Genzlinger-New York Times

As simple, straightforward, and elegant as its title.
Melissa Anderson-Village Voice

A quietly devastating exploration of the cruel paradox that, in order to feed their loved ones, emigrants have to leave them behind.
Jonathan Holland-Variety

'Here and There/Aquí y allá' does not consider politics, border polemics, cartels or global recession but, rather, is an unshrill rumination on family, love and hope.
Donald J. Levit-ReelTalk Movie Reviews

An understated but effective study of the problems faced by an "illegal" returning to his village in Mexico and an implicit argument against the brutality of North American nativism, under both Bush and Obama.
Louis Proyect-rec.arts.movies.reviews

An excessively formalistic approach does Antonio Méndez Esparza little favours in his bloated, flavourless feature debut.
Shaun Munro-What Culture

a slow, meandering film which tries to get viewers moving to the village's seasonal rhythms, but instead riffs far too long on a repetitive beat.
Anton Bitel-Eye for Film

A spiritual drama that puts two faces on Mexican poverty and then makes it possible for us to see these characters as our brother and sister rather than as strangers.
Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat-Spirituality and Practice

It's a confident vision, but its aversion to sentiment has the intended but unfortunate effect of making the characters' disconnects our own.
Ed Gonzalez-Slant Magazine
